Meds

Dear Poppy,

I’m sorry you were so worried while I was away. Alpha Dad says you spiraled down, worse each day. You even spit out your Prozac pills. Honey, that’s not good.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

I was so upset, thinking that you were never coming back.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

All the more reason to take your meds. Please don’t spit them out! You have so many things that make you anxious!

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

The world is full of scary things! Alpha Dad is one of them. And that sociopath Puffin. He is a very scary cat. And there’s the horrifying raccoon in the yard. Sherman the aggressive Corgi. And Thunder. I found out I’m really afraid of Thunder. But mostly I’m afraid of losing you.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

I always come back.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

You say that, but you could be having so much fun visiting your friend Jill that you want to stay there. And Alpha Dad said you really liked her dog Cassie.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

I like a lot of dogs, sweetie.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

You slept with Cassie.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

This is awkward. I don’t know why Alpha Dad told you about that. But it doesn’t mean anything. She just visited me each morning. Jumped on the bed and snuggled a bit. But not for long. No one will take your place.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

You don’t let me sleep on the bed.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

We don’t have room, sweetie. The cats are already there, so it’s pretty crowded. You have your comfy bed right next to me. It’s a Very Special Bed. The cats don’t have a Very Special Bed.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

Why did this Cassie fall in love with you so fast? Did you do something to make her love you?

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

You fell in love with me really fast.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

You might want to go live with her.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

Don’t worry, I won’t do that. But I will go visit them from time to time. You need to come to terms with that.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

Don’t go away. It was awful. Every time I heard the door I ran to check if it was you. But it was always Alpha Dad coming in or out.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

Poor Alpha Dad. He’s trying very hard to take care of you.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

He’s sort of scary.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

He’s very sweet and he has never done anything bad to you! He gives you treats. He talks to you. He loves you. I wish we knew what happened to you when you were young. You must have been very badly treated by a terrible man.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mommy,

A head-of-household Alpha Man. With big heavy shoes that kick.

XOXOXO

Poppy

Dear Poppy,

Alpha Dad will never kick you. And I will always come back. And Poppy honey, you need to keep taking your meds.

Love, Carolyn
