Magic Bell
by carolynholm
Mommy,
I don’t understand this noisy toy of Molly’s.
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
It’s a bell. It’s something I’ve been trying to teach you to use.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
I thought it was Molly’s to use.
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
That’s because she uses it a lot. She’s supposed to just ring it when she wants to go outside. But she doesn’t.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
What does it mean when she knocks it across the room?
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
That means she wants something. She’s ringing for service.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
I don’t understand. What kind of service?
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
I’m being vague, Sweetie, because I really don’t want you to follow in her footsteps. She should only ring it to be let outside.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
Molly said she has to ring it to get your attention.
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
That’s one of her annoying habits. She rings it when she thinks I should add kibble to the bowl. Or when she wants me to know it’s time for evening pills.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
What pills?
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
The treats you two get every evening. There’s a pill rolled up inside.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
There’s a pill in there? I love our evening treats!
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
Yes, that’s your Prozac. I’m glad you like the treats because they’re very important. We’ve come a long way dealing with your fears thanks to those little blue pills.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
Oh dear. Then I hope Molly keeps reminding you. Now please explain to me about ringing the bell to open the door.
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
I’ve been trying and trying to teach you about that. If you tap the bell with your foot I’ll know that you want to go outside.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
Why will I want to go outside? If you are inside that’s where I want to be.
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
That’s very sweet. But sometimes you need to go out to pee. And there are lots of times you want to go out because there’s a squirrel on the deck. Instead of lunging against the window and barking I’d rather you just rang the bell.
Love, Carolyn
Mommy,
I don’t understand how the bell knows how to open the door.
XOXOXO
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
I’m afraid this is going to take a while.
Love, Carolyn
