Dear Mom,
Where are all the people who were coming for Christmas Eve?
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Our plans got completely changed, sweetie. Life threw an epic wrench in the works. Between a medical emergency and a Covid case, our plans unraveled bit by bit. So, it turns out we’ll have a nice quiet Christmas Eve here together. Just us. We’ll have our big party on the 30th!
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
You can do that?
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Of course we can, if everyone’s schedules line up! And they do! Christmas is about the party, not about the date.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
But what happened?
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Remember when I was gone last week?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
You were gone for a WEEK. Puffin said you were eaten by predators.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
How many times have I told you not to listen to the cats?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
I freaked out.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I heard about that. You acted out in various difficult ways. Poor Dad was at his wits end. He would let you out and you wouldn’t come back in.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Because I knew he took you somewhere and you didn’t come back.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I had a medical procedure that went awry, sweetie, so I had to have emergency surgery and then stay in the hospital for the week. Dad had nothing to do with that. He was trying to take care of all of you. You really shouldn’t have left that big poop in front of the door.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
So, now our big party will be on the 30th? And all the usual folk will be there? Including the guy who likes to pick me up and carry me around?
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Yes! It will be complete chaos, but the best kind.
Love, Carolyn
