Bad News
by carolynholm
Dear Mom,
I know what this suitcase means. It is bad news. You are going away.
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
We’ll come back!
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
You may not.
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
We always come back.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
You may not.
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
We ALWAYS come back, Sweetie.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
Molly explained it to us. When you go away, predators get you. That’s why you are gone for so long.
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
No they don’t. If they did, how is it we have always come home again?
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
You’ve always escaped. But maybe this time they will eat you.
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
For a dog who hasn’t been with us for years, Molly sure causes a lot of trouble. We’ve been over and over this. I’m so sick of this predator story. I wish you hadn’t listened to her.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
Molly was very smart.
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
She was scary smart, but she was wrong on this one. So, rest assured, we are going away briefly, and then we are coming home again. Meanwhile I hope you and Puffin won’t tell Winston this story about the predators.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
We already did. But he doesn’t seem to care. He just wants to play. He doesn’t know enough to be worried.
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
True, he’s never known us to go anywhere. A classic pandemic kitten. All he knows is lockdown.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
He doesn’t understand that the predators might eat you. If he really understood that, he would be worried.
Poppy
Dear Poppy,
THEY ARE NOT GOING TO EAT US. There is nothing to be worried about. How many times do I have to say this? Nothing to be worried about! And you will be well cared for while we are gone.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
Is Cathie coming? We love Cathie!!!!!!!!!!
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
We are all grateful for Cathie.
Love, Carolyn
