Words

by carolynholm

Dear Mom,
Why do humans throw away old words?
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
We do?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
You do!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Which old words would these be?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Words you get in the mail.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
And they are old?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Sometimes you throw away words before they get old. You read and read and then you toss the words into the paper recycling bin.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
You’re talking about magazines!
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Yes. And they are full of words. They must be important words, because you get them in the mail, you carefully read them, and you even talk about what you are reading. But then you toss them. I don’t see why you get rid of important words.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I see. Well, the reading is the important part. After that they can be recycled.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Yesterday you used some words to go after a fly.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I did. I used an Atlantic Magazine as a fly swatter. That’s another way to repurpose a magazine.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
We were all worried.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Worried?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Worried about your violence!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
You know I wouldn’t go after any of you with a magazine, right?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
We never know!!! Slapping the wall with a magazine is very very violent.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I promise, I’ll stick to the occasional fly.
Love, Carolyn
