Pumpkin Spice

Dear Mommy,

What is this thing?

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

That’s a witch hat. Part of a costume for Halloween.

Dear Mommy

I totally don’t understand Halloween.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

That’s understandable. You’re not alone. Most animals are puzzled by it. In fact, not all humans get it. I’m sure many parts of the world are mystified by this American tradition. If nothing else, the Pumpkin Spice memes must raise all kinds of questions about our sanity.

Dear Mommy,

I notice vegetables are a big part of Halloween. Vegetables with faces. What’s that all about?

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

You mean pumpkins, I presume. Who knows where that came from. When they have faces they are called Jack o’Lanterns.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

They seem to be everywhere. Humans are nuts.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

They are everywhere. I even know someone who is dressing up as a Pumpkin for Halloween.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

She is going to dress as a vegetable?

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Humans love costumes.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Okay, costumes make sense. Dressing up to change your identity sounds fun. But dressing up as a vegetable makes no sense.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Hold on. You think costumes would be fun? Then why did you make such a big deal about it when I tried to put a witch costume on you? You almost took my arm off and you wriggled right out of it.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

You know I prefer to be naked.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

You’ve made that clear. You won’t even tolerate a collar.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

But a witch costume, that’s what I don’t understand about Halloween. Look at this hat. It’s downright ominous. I seriously question the human obsession with scary creatures. Witches. Vampires. Dead people. Donald Trump.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Humans like to be frightened, as long as it’s make-believe. I suspect it makes some people feel more alive.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

I don’t need to be scared to feel alive. A run up the curtains makes me feel alive.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Well said.

Love, Carolyn
