The Scream

The Scream

Dear Alpha Mom,

I lost you today in the garden. I was busy with a good smell and I didn’t hear you go back into the house.

Your Best Dog,

Molly

Dearest Molly,

I wasn’t going to leave you out there. I came back out to check on you a few minutes later.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mom,

I was relieved to see you.

Your Best Dog,

Molly

Dearest Molly,

I know you were. It’s not easy being deaf, is it? But we still communicate ok.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mom,

Like when you nod your head, or hold out your hand. I know what you mean.

Your Best Dog,

Molly

Dearest Molly,

You do! It’s a good thing we always did hand signals along with words.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mom,

When we are in the garden and you wave your arm, it’s clear we’re going back in.   Except when I lose track of you, like today. Is it hard for you that I’m deaf?

Your Best Dog,

Molly

Dearest Molly,

No, Sweetie, not at all. We muddle along. I think you’re doing very well for a dog your age. Fifteen years old is something to be proud of. It’s just sometimes.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mom,

Sometimes?

Your Best Dog,

Molly

Dearest Molly,

Well, it’s a little strange when you start screaming.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mom,

Screaming?

Your Best Dog,

Molly

Dearest Molly,

When we drive to the park, as soon as we get there you start screaming because you’re so thrilled we’ve arrived at our walk. Because you’re deaf you have no idea what you sound like.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mom,

What do I sound like?

Your Best Dog,

Molly

Dearest Molly,

It’s not your usual bark. It’s a scream. You sound crazy, and people stare. It’s embarrassing.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Alpha Mom,

Sorry.

Your Best Dog,

Molly

Dearest Molly,

It really isn’t a problem.  I should never have brought it up.

Love, Carolyn
