The Roster

by carolynholm

Dear Poppy,
Today was such a lovely spring day for our walk! I think Winston wanted to come along.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
He wouldn’t know what to do. Cats don’t understand about walks.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
It’s just walking around. I’m sure he could figure that out, if we could convince him to walk on a leash.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
I don’t think you understand about walks. It’s not about the walking around. It’s about the stops. To smell things.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
You stopped for a particularly long time in the park today.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
It was for that special clump of grass.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
What was so interesting about it?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Messages!!!!!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
There was a message from a dog you know?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Lots of them!!!!!!!!!!!!!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
All in one clump of grass?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Oh yes. There was the Rude Pug. And the big guy who barks behind the high fence. There was the Corgi. And a terrier who ate cat food. A Retriever who ate corned beef. Another Retriever. A Border Collie. The terrier who shouts at me. A pit bull who is taking a medication. The spaniel mix who always wants to play with me. The noisy Chihuahua, also on medication. And Spencer was there too. It’s nice to hear from a neighbor.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
All that from those messages? How do you know what they ate?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
It’s in the message!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Seriously? You mean you can smell the cat food in dog pee left hours ago?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Of course I can! That’s what noses are for! Can’t you?
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I’m afraid humans just don’t have that kind of nose. It’s amazing that you can smell all that detail.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
That was just the dogs. And just for today. There was a fox too. And later another fox.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
No coyotes?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Not today. But one came there yesterday.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I saw you leave a message yourself.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Of course I did. It’s the only polite thing to do.
XOXO Poppy
