The Power
by carolynholm
Dear Mom,
Something scary is going on! Puffin says it is an April Fool’s joke!
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
Wait, what?
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
April Fool’s Day is tomorrow. He says that’s why you have been muttering about Power.
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
Oh, so all this has been because the universe is pranking us? With epic storms knocking down trees and turning off the power? Good prank.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
What’s The Power?
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
It’s what makes the lights go on, and the furnace go on, and it was off for a day and a half. That’s why the house is so cold. And it just went off again.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
That sounds extremely alarming. Why didn’t I know The Power could do this?
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
Normally you’d never even notice it. Power is not something tangible you can bark at.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
Also, all the neighbors were in the street. That isn’t normal!!! Was this a party?
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
It was like a party, wasn’t it? We were all out watching the tree situation.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
What’s a tree situation?
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
You were with me. Didn’t you see that huge tree that fell over, into the power lines? That’s one of the reasons we didn’t have any power.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
I was watching the neighbors and the other dogs, not the trees.
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
That makes perfect sense.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
Why were you all so interested in a tree?
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
When it fell, it got stuck in another tree and the power lines. The tree guys had to be raised up in crane buckets, wielding their chainsaws close to the wires, cutting away the leaning tree. It was immensely entertaining! We cheered when their crane finally got the trunk lowered down to the ground.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
Puffin says it’s not real. He said “April Fool’s!!!!”
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
I wish that were so, sweetie. But it’s real. I’ve told you before, don’t pay too much attention to what the cats tell you.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
Puffin says we’re supposed to play a joke on you for April Fools. But I don’t think dogs do jokes.
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
Not very well, anyway.
Love, Carolyn
Dear Mom,
Do cats do jokes?
XOXO Poppy
Dear Poppy,
I wouldn’t put it past them.
Love, Carolyn
