The Game

by carolynholm

Dear Puffin,
I have to say, I love watching you every evening when we play The Game. Your form, your focus, your skill – you are an outstanding player.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
Madame is too kind.
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
You don’t waste any time. You go straight for the capture. And then walk your prey over to drop it on the corner of the rug.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
Mais oui, this is the correct place to deliver the prey.
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
Apparently the capture isn’t complete until the prey is delivered to the right place.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
Vraiment. Madame understands the rules of The Game.
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
Winston loves to watch from his spot on the back of the sofa while he’s waiting for his turn to play a game. I like to think he’s up in the stands. It is interesting that he never tries to come down and go after your prey.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
Zut, that would be completely irregular. The Winston knows he can’t do that.
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
No, it’s clearly your game to play.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
He knows there must be respect for the senior cat.
Regards, M. le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
Once in a while the prey flies up into the stands. Like a foul ball in baseball. Winston gets all excited about that.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
The excitement is seulement for the moment. The Winston is but a spectator.
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
He loves to watch. You play with such deadly precision. You pull that creature right out of the air. Snag it as it tries to race past you. Pull it out from where it hides under the sofa. Such a virtuoso!
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
The Winston can’t do any of that.
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
He has a different set of skills, his is a different game. I just keep tossing those crinkly foil balls at him and he leaps up and snags them in the air. While he’s paying attention. Then when he loses focus, they just bounce off his forehead. But he’s still young. Maybe one day he will grow into the thorough professional that you are.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
Madame is too kind.
Regards, M. Le Poufin
