Special

by carolynholm

Dear Mom,
Winston keeps trying to take my ball.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
He’s just curious. Everyone knows it’s your special toy.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
He shouldn’t be playing with it.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
You don’t even play with it, sweetie. I don’t think you know what to do with a ball.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
I know what to do!!!!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
You have no idea what the game of Fetch is all about.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Am I supposed to know that??????
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
No, don’t worry about it. It’s just funny that you just don’t know what to do with a ball.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
But it’s MINE. That’s what I do with it.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Ok I get it. What you do with it is, you own it.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Yes!!!!!!!!! But the cats think they are so special. That they get to have everything.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
They do have a strong sense of privilege.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
It’s not fair! They get to be on your lap. Winston even sits on your chest.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
He is a chest cat, isn’t he! But honey, you are too big for that. And when someone picks you up, you look really uncomfortable.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
And the cats get to be in your bed!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
True. But you have your own comfy bed right next to mine.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Yes!!!!! That bed is all mine!!!!!!!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy
So each of you has something special. You get to go outside. Out into the garden. Out for a walk. Puffin is definitely jealous of that.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Why don’t the cats just go out with us?
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
They are not allowed out. It’s not safe. There are foxes and coyotes around here who would love to chow down on a cat for lunch. And our street is very busy with dangerous cars. So those boys have to be strictly indoor cats. But you have the special privilege of going out.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
You’ve been making a lot of fuss over Puffin. You’ve been offering him special food.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
He’s old and sick, sweetie. He has a tumor in his mouth. That’s why one side of his face bulges a bit.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Sometimes he has blood coming out of his mouth.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
He can’t help it. The tumor is bleeding. So when he sleeps he has blood in his drool. That’s why there are towels all over the house now, in all the places he likes to sleep.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
When he sleeps in my bed under the coffee table he gets blood on it.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I’ll put a towel there too.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
That’s ok, I lick it off.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Ew.
Love, Carolyn
