Rules

by carolynholm

Dear Mom,
Everyone has rules.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
That’s probably true. Mia always had a very strict rule about touching her belly. It wasn’t allowed. No exceptions. Puffin has a lot of rules but they are more about sticking to the household schedule. I don’t think Winston has any rules. Maybe that will change as he grows older.

Dear Mom,
You have a lot of rules when we’re out on walks.

Dear Poppy,
You mean not barking at other dogs like you are some kind of crazy animal?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Well, that one too. But I was thinking about the No Grass rule.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I totally don’t get why you are so ravenous for grass.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Just the green grass. I don’t eat brown grass.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Is it so delicious? Or addicting? Or is this because it’s forbidden?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
I don’t get why it’s a problem.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
It’s a problem because I don’t want to see it again.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Why would you? It goes down my throat!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Unfortunately, sometimes it comes up again. Of course, never in the bathroom where there is a tile floor. No, you head straight for the living room, to bring it up on our lovely old Armenian rug.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
You also don’t let me snack on our walks.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
If you are referring to the chicken bones you found yesterday, ewww, you are correct, they are not an ok snack. When I see you dive into a bush with that much intensity, I know you are going to come out with something gross. A surprising number of chicken wing bones. Cat poop. Who knows what? Dogs will eat anything.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
You always pry the snacks right out of my mouth.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Of course I do. But I don’t get the human element here. Who walks around the neighborhood gnawing on a chicken wing, and then tosses the bones into the bushes?
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
I don’t know who does! Am I supposed to know this?????
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
It was a rhetorical question. That means you don’t need to know the answer. I was just asking the universe.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
What a relief!!!!
XOXO Poppy
