Rivals

by carolynholm

Dear Mom,
How long are we going to babysit Mika?
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Two weeks. You have a pal to hang with! Of course, the cats aren’t thrilled. Mika needs to stop barking at them. But she’s already getting better about that.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Mika says she is the senior dog. So, I’m supposed to let her have everything she wants.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
She is older than you are. Maybe you could humor her.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
She ignores you half the time!!!!!!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
She’s not ignoring me, sweetie. She’s deaf. She doesn’t hear me come in the room.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
She wants my food! I’m not used to having a rival!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Actually, you are. You and the cats are constantly jockeying for position.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
The cats always want your attention. Winston gets huffy because he says Puffin is always on your lap.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Puffin is not always on my lap. Meanwhile Puffin gets huffy when he finds Winston in one of “his” spots.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
That’s when Puffin gives Winston The Look to chase him out of there.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
You bark every time Dad picks up Winston. And you bark every time one of the cats walks past your food bowl.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
They want to steal my food!!!!! And Dad gives Winston too much attention.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Dad is a popular guy. Puffin has been on a serious Charm Offensive with Dad. Curling up every evening next to him, expecting a lot of petting. Meanwhile Puffin has been stand-off-ish with me. I think because I interrupted his nap the other day, to weigh him.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Cats. As rivals for attention go, Mika is much less complicated.
XOXO Poppy
