New Music

Dear Mommy,

I’m a musician now.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

In what way are you a musician?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

You sound surprised.  You shouldn’t be surprised about my music.  I’m an artist and a dancer.  Music follows naturally.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia

I’m not surprised.  In fact I think that’s wonderful, Sweetie!  What kind of music do you do?  Do you play an instrument?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

I play the box.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

The box?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

You got a box in the mail yesterday and I needed to open it to see what was inside.  Getting it open made a nice sound.   Scritch scratch scratchy scritchy scratchy scritch.  That’s the introductory phrase.  Then I repeat it seventeen times.  Or eighteen.  I haven’t worked it all out yet.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

That’s very interesting.  I heard you last night.  I was wondering what was going on.  But I always thought you preferred pop music.  Sounds like this is a little different.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

It is.  It’s very modern. It’s called New Music.  I have broad interests, and now I’m very interested in New Music.  I’m thinking I might call the Kronos Quartet to see if they want me to join their group.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

I’m not so sure they’re interested in becoming a quintet, even though you play a nice box.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

There’s more.  There’s another sound I make.  When I run down the hall my feet make an exciting noise.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

They’re definitely percussive.

Love, Carolyn
