Large Format

Dear Mia,

I hope you are not going to make a big mess with my painting stuff.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

I’m an artist. I don’t make a mess. I create art.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

I’d better not find any of that art spattered on my rugs.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Don’t worry, I’m not working on your rugs. I’ll work in the kitchen. But I’ll need some bright colored paints. I’m very interested in large color fields.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Do you even know what a color field is?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

I think it’s something like a meadow, but with lots of color.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

That’s an interesting interpretation. Where are you getting your information?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

I’ve been reading your mail.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

You’ve been reading my mail???

Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Yes, the mail from SFMOMA. I’ll also need some big canvases. I’m planning to work in a very large format.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

I have to say, that sounds alarming. How large?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Maybe six feet tall. Maybe bigger! I’m inspired by Ellsworth Kelly. His really big pieces with bright colors. Like Red on Red.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

That explains a lot. I see where you got your color field idea. But I think maybe we need to scale this down a bit. Ellsworth Kelly’s paintings are about as tall as he was, so maybe you could make paintings that are as tall as you are!

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Less than a foot high?

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Yes! Doesn’t that sound wonderful?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Why is it artists have to work with people who don’t appreciate their aspirations?

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

I love your aspirations, honey. As long as they can fit on my kitchen table.

Love, Carolyn
