Feather Time

by carolynholm

Hey Mom,
Why doesn’t Puffin play the evening prey game anymore?
Winston

Dear Winston,
I wish I knew. I think he got out of the habit when we went away for a few weeks.
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
Puffin still has some interest in playing! He bats at it. Kinda.
Winston

Dear Winston,
He’s become an armchair player. Just lies back and swats at the prey when it comes close. Then he heads down the hall to sit by Dad’s desk and wait for Dad’s evening treat.
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
Once in a while he takes hold of it and yells, just like old times.
Winston

Dear Winston,
Not for long though. Not like he used to, back when his game had rules and strategy and lots of meowing. I thought maybe we needed a new game, so I tried switching to the feather wand. But he won’t do much with it either, before he heads off for the treat.
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
The feather wand is GREAT!!!
Winston

Dear Winston,
I know, right? Maybe it’s time for you to join in when Puffin is playing! You could show him how much fun the feather wand is and maybe he’d play along. You could play together.
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
Puffin would NOT like that. He would probably whack me.
Winston

Dear Winston,
You are very deferential to him. When he is playing, I see you lurking under a nearby chair, watching every move we make.
Love, Carolyn

Hey Mom,
I’m NOT allowed to take part in Puffin’s game.
Winston

Dear Winston,
That’s why I wait until he is completely finished before I get the feather wand out for you to have a turn.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
Am I supposed to develop rules and strategy and yelling, just like Puffin did with his game?
Winston

Dear Winston,
Only if you want to. But that’s not really your style.
Love, Carolyn

Mom,
What’s my style?
Winston

Dear Winston,
Wild chaotic freakout. And a very short attention span.
Love, Carolyn
