Barbie Cat

Dear Mommy,

Look what I found! A little lady doll!

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

That’s a Barbie Doll. Someone gave it to my daughter for her birthday when she was three years old. I can’t believe we still have it. The lady who gave it to her said she picked it out because it was a Barbie that looked like my daughter.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Barbie is just like me! Slender, with long legs and big eyes.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

I’m not sure I’d call you look-alikes, sweetie.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

I have an exciting idea!

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

All your ideas are exciting. What’s this one?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Let’s design a Barbie Cat!

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

A Barbie Cat? You mean a little cat pet for Barbies?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

No, an iconic doll in the shape of a beautiful cat. Like me.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Seriously? A Barbie doll that is a cat?

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

Yes, slender, with long legs and big eyes.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Okay, this time you’ve left me speechless.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

I’m the perfect model for the Barbie Cat! I am slender! I have long legs! I have big beautiful eyes! And we can give her lovely spotted fur. And a tail.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

But sweetie, setting aside the fur and the tail and well, the whole idea of a Barbie Cat… An image that I don’t think I’m going to be able to get rid of any time soon… Setting those aside, Barbie dolls aren’t something you should emulate! They are grotesque!

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

You are really getting worked up over this.

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Barbie Dolls are a completely unrealistic version of the human form.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

They are? But everyone wants slender bodies, long legs and big eyes!

Love, Mia

Dear Mia,

Well a lot of people do want those things, but not like this. If a woman had a body like this one she wouldn’t have room inside herself for her internal organs. Barbie is a freak.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

But I thought this Barbie Doll was designed to look like your daughter.

Love Mia

Dear Mia,

No! Of course not! How could you say that!

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

You told me that when she got it for a birthday gift the lady said it looked just like her.

Love, Mia,

Dear Mia,

That well-meaning lady bought that particular Barbie doll because it had dark hair. But other than that it had absolutely no resemblance to my daughter.

Love, Carolyn

Dear Mommy,

So you think if we made a Barbie Cat it would be a freak?

Love, Mia,

Dear Mia,

I’m having a hard time picturing it as anything other than grotesque. Overall I don’t think this is one of your better ideas, sweetie. You are welcome to play with this Barbie doll, but let’s not try to design a freaky Barbie Cat. That just gives me the creeps.

Love, Carolyn
