One Year

by carolynholm

Cher Madame,
Qu’est-ce que c’est? What is this grande mountain of trash? Has Madame lost her marbles?
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
It’s not exactly trash. These are some of the grocery bags and take-out containers we’ve been accumulating. Kind of a sad tribute to a really weird year.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
Et pourquoi so many?
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
It’s now been a full year of lockdown. A whole year of getting groceries delivered. Of getting everything delivered. Everything. And to think, at first we thought the lockdown was going to be for maybe two weeks! The next thing we knew, the only thing we went out for was to pick up restaurant take-out. Do that for a year and that’s a lot of boxes and bags and plastic food containers. But I’m not complaining. We were fortunate. A lot of people did not fare as well as we did. For many it was a tragic year.

Cher Madame,
This pile of trash, this mountain, she is from a whole year of Madame’s groceries and take-out food?
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
On dear no, this is just a fraction. I have a closet filled with this stuff. And this pile doesn’t even include the cardboard boxes. I’ve been breaking those down every week and putting them in the recycle bin.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
Why does Madame not put the bags and the containers also into the recycle bin?
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
The plastic probably doesn’t qualify. And I keep thinking I should find uses for them. I use the plastic bags to line our trash bins. I filled some paper bags with give-away clothing. I filled some takeout containers with cookies for friends. I’m trying to think of what to do with the rest.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
C’est simple. Toss the rest.
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
I never thought I’d say this, Puffin: you might be right. But, I probably won’t toss it. I’ll just keep accumulating and fretting about it.
Love, Carolyn

Cher Madame,
Typical.
Regards, M. Le Poufin

Dear Puffin,
Always the sarcasm.
Love, Carolyn
