The Spy, Part 2

by carolynholm

Dear Mom,
He keeps coming back!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Let me guess. By “he” you are referring to Louie.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Yes!!!!! That crazy orange cat who was coming onto our patio to peek in the window at us. Now he’s coming into our garden!
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
We’ve always had neighborhood cats in our garden, sweetie. Probably interested in the meadow mice who hang out under the bird feeder.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
Louie isn’t like other cats.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
No, I guess he’s not. He’s the neighborhood scourge. The boss of the street. The self-appointed mayor of our block.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
He’s a spy! Yesterday he was curled right up, comfortable as you please, under one of the rose bushes. Waiting for me to come outside.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Doing some field work, no doubt. Getting the goods on our garden.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
It’s just wrong. A neighbor cat should not feel so at home in our garden. It’s OUR garden. But when I run up to him, he just stares at me. He never runs away.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
He’s a cool dude. Nothing rattles him.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
I don’t want to rattle him. I just want to sniff him!.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
You were using your Cat Voice.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
I don’t sound like a cat!!!!!
Poppy

Dear Poppy,
I didn’t mean you sound like a cat. I’m just referring to the special whimpery little noise you make when you want to meet a cat. When we go for a walk, and you make that sound, I know to look around, and sure enough, there is a cat peering down at us from a porch.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
They aren’t always on a porch.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
Dogs are so literal. No, that was just an example. Anyway, I like it that you have such a nice way of talking to cats.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
I’m being polite! I’m not barking rudely. I just want to tell him to leave. But Louie stares at me. Like he owns that patch under the roses.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
The fact that he was curled up on a catnip plant might have had something to do with his location.
Love, Carolyn

Dear Mom,
He squashed that catnip.
XOXO Poppy

Dear Poppy,
You’re right. It’s a goner.
Love, Carolyn
